BBC First had a visibility challenge. After ten years the Dutch audience still saw it as a "high-brow export” admired from a distance, but not truly embraced. BBC Studios tasked us to bridge that gap. Together, we transformed BBC First into BBC NL, a premium, future-proofed destination built specifically for the Dutch eye.
To break the "high-brow export" perception, we pivoted from a distant broadcaster to a local curator under the positioning Effortlessly Different. The strategy was rooted in removing the cognitive load of the paradox of choice that often ruins a viewer's limited me-time. By framing the BBC as a relatable neighbor rather than a rigid institution, we focused on two strategic levers: Effortless localization (Dutch-specific curation and navigation) and Different storytelling (leveraging British quirkiness as a refreshing alternative to over-augmented US content). This move transformed the channel from a demanding viewing experience into a curated escape, where the quality is a given and the discovery is seamless.
We applied a ‘Surprisingly Simple’ design concept to the iconic BBC heritage with one clear goal, to do more with less. By taking the classic BBC square and designed a modular system that reflects the pragmatic, strikingly effective Dutch spirit. We established a single foundation with four expressions: Calm, Effortless, Quirky, and Surprising tailored for everything from prestige drama to sharp British wit.
Motion is where this personality truly comes to life, through calm grid reveals, seamless layered transitions, and playful dimensional cube transformations, we created a rhythmic language that gives the system depth and character.
This visual bridge, mixing distinctly British elegance with vibrant Dutch accents, carries directly into a voice that is intentionally clear, smart, and warmly self-assured. By merging British charm with Dutch directness, we crafted the tone of a trusted curator, friendly but not fluffy. This way we ensure every line reduces friction and sparks a smile, allowing the audience to finally settle into their me-time with ease.
The identity system translates with precision from the screen to a billboard. On TV, the iconic BBC squares acts as the core element that driving everything from premium idents to functional transitions across our four brand expressions. On social, this same square frames and elevates content, providing a consistent structure and a recognizable personality in a crowded feed. This flexibility extends to OOH, where bold colors and a modular design system ensure coherence across everything from digital billboards to tram wraps. Across all digital touchpoints, the system scales effortlessly, creating a unified experience that makes the journey from a social post to the TV screen feel like one smooth, continuous story.

The expansion into BBC NL+ proves the system’s true scalability. By applying the same ‘Surprisingly Simple’ logic to the digital space, we ensured that the premium, curated experience of the linear channel translates seamlessly into a standalone VOD environment. The modular block system scales effortlessly into digital menus, tiles, and navigation, maintaining brand authority while prioritizing user ease.

The impact of the transformation is undeniable. Since the shift from BBC First to BBC NL, daily viewership in the core 25–59 demographic has surged by 22%, bringing our monthly reach to over 2 million Dutch viewers. We have secured our position as a Top 10 channel in the market and the #1 international channel overall.
Engagement has followed suit, with average time spent on the channel increasing by 19%. More importantly, the audience now actually "gets" us: the perception of the channel being curated specifically for the Dutch market increased by 17%, while brand awareness has climbed to 73%.
On social media, the feedback is as direct as it gets, viewers describe themselves as "addicted," helping our content reach over 300k people organically. This momentum has already translated into commercial growth, securing two new affiliate partners for BBC NL+ and cementing our digital future.
